My yard in Oakland was remodeled from flat clay dirt to two levels, with a stone wall and a stone waterfall which fell into a small pond, to remind me of New England. It was planted beautifully initially but I wasn't skilled enough to keep it up nor was anybody else until I asked Neil to try, after I heard him give a talk on pond maintenance. For the last 5 years or so my pond and the fish have thrived: he had to build it back up which included becoming more and more creative defensively against my local Oakland raccoons, which also loved the pond. The plants are now sturdy, bloom regularly, and I have cattails every fall. The water–which recycles– runs at a small volume continuously which helps to keep it crystal clear, and it reminds me of exactly what I wanted it to…I feel that I am in the New England woods, instead of a city neighborhood. Everyone who sees it is just amazed.
